Mark Aguhar – Rest in Power

I knew Mark as calloutqueen on tumblr, and I just heard the news of their death today. Mark was a genderqueer fat femme of colour & a revolutionary. I feel like, as a white cis femme who didn’t know Mark personally, I should just shut the fuck up & get to the art. I want people to know Mark’s work, to recognize it as a game-changing contribution to the queer cannon, to do whatever needs to be done now to ensure that calloutqueen is a part of queer history, to foster as many acts of learning & recognition & solace & inspiration as I can.

Not you (Power Circle) Mark Aguhar 2011

Here’s Mark’s artist’s statement:

My work is about visibility. My work is about the fact that I’m a genderqueer person of color fat femme fag feminist and I don’t really know what to do with that identity in this world.

It’s that thing where you grew up learning to hate every aspect of yourself and unlearning all that misery is really hard to do.

It’s that thing where you kind of regret everything you’ve ever done because it’s so complicit with white hegemony.

It’s that thing where you realize that your own attempts at passive aggressive manipulation and power don’t stand a chance against the structural forms of DOMINATION against your body.

It’s that thing where the only way to cope with the reality of your situation is to pretend it doesn’t exist; because flippancy is a privilege you don’t own but you’re going to pretend you do anyway.

These are the axes (#1), after Mark Aguhar's "Axes", Diamond Mind

“These are the Axes”:

3

Be ugly

4

Know beauty

5

It is complicated

"just remembering how pretty I am"

“Litanies to my heavenly brown body”:

BLESSED ARE THE DISABLED

BLESSED ARE THE HOT FAT GIRLS

BLESSED ARE THE WEIRDO-QUEERS

BLESSED IS THE SPECTRUM

BLESSED IS CONSENT

BLESSED IS RESPECT

BLESSED ARE THE BELOVED WHO I DIDN’T DESCRIBE, I COULDN’T DESCRIBE, WILL LEARN TO DESCRIBE AND RESPECT AND LOVE

AMEN

No Top Needed by Mark Aguhar

I think I’ve all but given up on trying to organize around something so annoying to me as sexuality the idea that having sexual urges toward any given type of person somehow aligns me to anyone else who has even vaguely analogous desires to someone who is vaguely analogous to my desire object is boring I don’t care about identities, I care about lifestyles I don’t care about your urges, I care about your agency gay is an unsatisfying category to me faggot comes closer. —CALLOUTQUEEN

Jessica & Majestic’s posts (check out the notes!) document some femme acts of grief: “Put on all your makeup and cry it all off.”

Cubist Literature has a post up today about Mark, too.

Awesome tribute post to a beautiful human being <3 But I'm pretty sure Mark most recently used "they" pronouns. Amend?

Absolutely – I tried to find a definitive post for this but could not (lots of reblogs of things w/ different dates & different pronouns, the post I found had both.)

So, so sad. I am wearing my full complement of glittery eye makeup and lip colour today in honour of Mark. (And I embroidered some of my favourite of her words on a scrap of evenweave fabric this afternoon, here. Slowly reflecting on her work this afternoon made me even sadder.)

my heart my heart my heart
i’m going out in public with lace and glam and sequins and sparkles and i’m going to cry, i’m going to cry and when someone asks why, i’ll tell them “because we lost an amazing fucking person today.”

  4. Katrina says :

The world is now a less beautiful place. I wish I had known their work before now. Rest in Peace.
